T

he city is gearing up to celebrate its 483rd anniversary by hosting 75 local and international events in June and July, expecting to entertain residents and draw overseas visitors.

Deputy Governor Prijanto opened the two months of celebrations in front of the Fatahillah Museum or the Jakarta History Museum in West Jakarta on Sunday. He represented Governor Fauzi Bowo, who could not attend the festivity.

In front of thousands of visitors, Prijanto announced this year's theme of the anniversary: "With diversity, we build Jakarta as an environmentally friendly service city".

The Jakarta Service City is a campaign program the administration introduced recently that includes, among other things, bureaucratic reform, development of city tourism and entrepreneurship.

City spokesman Cucu Ahmad Kurnia said this year the administration would hold new events.

"Our new event called *Stop littering rivers' is expected to be a highlight," he told The Jakarta Post.

He said the program, which will kick off in densely populated Menteng Tenggulun, Central Jakarta, on June 20, would represent the theme of this year's anniversary. "We want the city to be more environmentally friendly," Cucu said.

The administration will also hold regular events such as the Jakarta Fair in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, to last from June 10 to July 11, and the Abang-None beauty pageant.

Highlights of this year's celebrations include the Pasar Baru Festival in Central Jakarta on June 4, the Kemang Festival on Jl. Kemang Raya, South Jakarta, on June 10, the Betawi Culture Festival in Srengseng City Forest in Kembangan, West Jakarta, and Ancol Festival in North Jakarta on June 26. Dance and carnival lovers should not miss the International Dance Festival in Taman Ismail Marzuki in Cikini, Central Jakarta, on June 14 and street carnival Jakarnaval on June 27.

For those who plan to splurge, get ready to hit the Jakarta Great Sale, which 64 city malls will participate in on June 18.

This year's celebrations also include sporting events such as the World Junior Golf Championship in Pantai Indah Kapuk in North Jakarta on Monday, street football in Pulo Mas, East Jakarta, on June 6, and the International Junior Tennis Championships in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on June 14.

Other awaited events include the Jakarta International 10K run competition on June 20, a swimming competition at Thousand Islands regency, the Bahari Festival on June 24 and the Betawi Cup Water Polo Tournament in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on June 30. Cucu did not elaborate on the budget for holding the 75 events, saying the budget was allocated in every agency and some private partners had lent their support.
