T Carrefour Indonesia, one of the country's largest retailers, launched Monday a program in the company's hypermarket outlets that will offer customers a range of products made by small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), says a company official.
About 140 SMEs joined Carrefour's first bazaar in Jakarta and sold various products, including food, garments, herbal medicine, handicrafts and furniture. The bazaar will run from May 31 to June 6, said a company official.
Carrefour's second bazaar will start in Palembang, South Sumatra, on June 7. The company will stage week-long bazaars in the parking outlets of all its outlets in Indonesia.
Carrefour president director Shafie Shamsuddin said in Jakarta on Monday that the bazaar was also a selection process for SMEs that hope to sell products at the company's hypermarkets and supermarkets.
"Carrefour has allocated Rp 3 billion *US$327,000* for the program," Shafie told reporters at the program's launch, which was attended by eight Cabinet ministers.
"After the bazaar, we will choose winners based on sales, display layouts and product creativity."
"The winners will receive training, financial support and free promotion," he added.
The winners would become temporary Carrefour suppliers and be allowed to display and promote their products at an area inside Carrefour outlets to be called Pojok Rakyat.
If the winners can sustain sales, product quality and supply continuity over time, Carrefour will make them permanent suppliers and offer them an opportunity to become a global supplier, he added.
"Carrefour is aiming to recruit 100 new suppliers from the SME sector by the end of the year," Carrefour president commissioner Chairul Tanjung said.
He added that there would be no fees for SMEs to participate in the program. (rch)
