Members of the House of Representatives monitoring team on the Bank Century bailout renewed their demand for a police investigation into Vice President Boediono and former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, shrugging off a political deal among parties to tone down a row over the case
embers of the House of Representatives monitoring team on the Bank Century bailout renewed their demand for a police investigation into Vice President Boediono and former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, shrugging off a political deal among parties to tone down a row over the case.
Gayus Lumbuun from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said the National Police should summon Mulyani for questioning as soon as possible for her role in the controversial bailout.
“Why has Ibu Sri Mulyani escaped police investigation into this alleged banking crime and money laundering?” Gayus asked National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri during a hearing at the House on Wednesday.
Gayus said the investigation into Mulyani was important, because she once said she felt as if she was cheated by Bank Indonesia officials when she decided to authorize the bailout, which increased tenfold to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million).
Bambang Soesatyo from the Golkar Party questioned the police’s half-hearted commitment to investigating the case because they had not yet summoned Bank Indonesia and Finance Ministry high-ranking officials for questioning.
The bailout was authorized in November 2008 by Mulyani and then BI governor Boediono.
Political tension between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party and its coalition partners, particularly Golkar, cooled down as soon as Mulyani resigned as the finance minister and accepted an offer to work in Washington, DC as a World Bank managing director last month.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Gayus also asked the national police chief for validity of a claim by former National Police chief detective Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji who said the probe into Boediono had been halted as he contested the presidential election as Yudhoyono’s running mate.
In his response, Bambang refuted Susno’s account, saying there had never been any plan to summon Boediono for questioning in the first place. “When an investigation concerns high ranking state officials, there must be official letters and documentation. The fact is there was no document concerning the matter,” Bambang said.
