Unlawful Harley rider faces prison for abusing policeman

P

rosecutors are seeking a one year jail term for a Harley Davidsonrider who allegedly abused a police officer, while the recent deaths of two teenagers in Bandung has once again raised concern over motorcycle gangs.

Jodi Jay Kusuma is being tried for assaulting a police officer during the Braga Bike Festival in December last year.

After six months in court, prosecutor Dodi Junaedi argued that Jodi was guilty of offending the state official.

“The defendant has confessed his guilt and regrets the wrongdoing,” Dodi said after the session.

According to the witnesses, the incident began when Police Brigadier Dasep reprimanded Jodi for using a siren to lead a convoy through jammed traffic. He was among a 20-strong convoy of Harley Davidson Club members.

Jodi proceeded to grab Dasep by his uniform, lifting him up and causing his shirt buttons to be ripped off.
Jodi was still unsatisfied. He followed Dasep to the police headquarters on Jl. Asia-Africa where the former, with his helmet still on, slapped the officer four times.

Jodi, who is reported to be the son of a high-ranked officer and trainer of national bodybuilding athletes, rode away while threatening to have Dasep transferred to Papua.

Jodi and his lawyer will present their defense plea next week.

Meanwhile, in the wake of two deaths in clashes between two groups of motorbike gangs in Bandung, people have yet again voiced their concern, calling for the police to exercise stern measures against unlawful behavior.

West Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Dade Ahmad said police would step up night patrols, especially in crime-prone areas.

“Police are aware of the procedures, such as when to use guns. We must take stern measures. If they resist arrest, they can be shot on the spot,” Dade told The Jakarta Post in Bandung on Wednesday.

Dade said the police had obtained the identity of at least four of the perpetrators — all teenagers and members of a motorcycle gang. He added the police had so far established cooperation with the automotive communities in the Sejuta Kawan (a million friends) program in curbing the rate of street crime, especially at night.

“Usually, those who commit the street crimes claim to be motorcycle club members, but they are not from official clubs, or if they are, have acted individually,” said Dade.

Dade called on city residents to minimize the rate of street crimes, such as by avoiding deserted areas if they had to go out at night.

“The appeal is especially to motorcyclists. If a group of motorcycle gang members approach you, it is better to avoid them and not initiate a fight,” said Dade.
