SOLO, Central Java: More than 400,000 of 1.2 million copies of various ancient newspaper in the collection of National Press Museum will be digitally reproduced, an official said Thursday.
Bambang Subijantoro, the acting director general at the communications facility, said Thursday the project would begin soon.
Bambang said the government would provide Rp 500 million on top of the Rp 2.5 billion made available to build the document storage room in the museum this year, Antara state news agency reported.
The museum and the digital reproduction project aims to make the ancient city a print media icon thanks to its role in the history of the press in Indonesia, which began long before the proclamation of independence in 1945.
Museum director Sujatmiko said the oldest newspaper in the collection dated back to 1913.
The museum was the venue of the Indonesian Journalists Association’s first congress in 1946 and was inaugurated by president Soeharto in 1978. — JP
