Customs and Excise officers have arrested an Iranian national for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

The office’s head of prosecutions Gatot Sugeng Wibowo said the suspect, identified only as RY, 24, was arrested after officers found 580 grams of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of Rp 11 billion (US$1.19 million) in his luggage.

“The drugs were wrapped in two packages and hidden between the walls of the suspect’s hard-case luggage,” Gatot said Sunday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

He said RY had arrived on a flight from Doha, Qatar, and may be linked to a drug trafficking syndicate in Iran.

The office has arrested several Iranians in connection with drugs smuggling over past few months, he added.
