President gives new national committees six-month deadline

P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono welcomed members of the newly established national committees on economy and innovation at the State Palace on Tuesday while handing them a six-month deadline to come up with a set of recommendations.

Yudhoyono said both committees, officiated by a presidential decree signed on May 20, would produce comprehensive assessments of the state budget, economic connectivity, sustainable growth, poverty and unemployment reduction, job creation, food, water and energy resiliency, and a domestic financing mechanism.

“We don’t have enough time to have analytical assessments on governmental policies. We hope they can finish their task in six months,” Yudhoyono was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

Yudhoyono said the committees should assess the effectiveness of the state budget in spearheading economic growth while reducing Indonesia’s dependency on foreign debt in the long run.

The second most important job for the committee, he said, was to asses the connectivity between the output of Indonesia’s domestic economy with its domestic market as opposed to the country’s export market.

Yudhoyono said the distribution of goods within the country should be improved to meet growing domestic consumption. Thus, he said, the committee should come up with recommendations on how to improve national logistics.

Like its counterparts in Asia, Indonesia faces challenges from the financial crisis in the US and Europe, which have led to weakening demand for Indonesian products. Economists and business executives have advised economies in Asia to focus on improving domestic consumption in a bid to maintain a positive trajectory for economic growth.
