The Jakarta High Court upheld on Thursday a lower court’s verdict which sentenced former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar to 18 years in prison for masterminding the murder of businessman Nasruddin Zulkarnaen.

The verdict was read by presiding judge Mohtar Ritonga at the High Court building in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta.

The former KPK chief had claimed the South Jakarta District Court had failed to prove the motive behind the murder.

Nasruddin, a director of state-owned pharmaceutical company PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, was killed in a drive-by shooting near Modernland golf course in Tangerang on March 14 last year.

Prosecutors believed Antasari had an affair with Nasruddin’s third wife Rhani Juliani and panicked when Nasruddin threatened to expose the scandal to the media and ruin his reputation, the indictment said.

Three other defendants in the same case — media mogul Sigid Haryo Wibisono, former South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Williardi Wizard and middleman Jerry Hermawan Lo — were also sentenced to 15, 12 and five years in prison, respectively.
