BMKG: Dry season to arrive in July

The government revised its weather forecast on Friday, saying the dry season would come almost one month later than expected mostly in cities across Java Island due to the anomalous sea temperature rise.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted the dry season in some 52 weather zones in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sulawesi and Maluku would only arrive in July from the previous forecast of between May and June.

“We recorded the highest ever sea temperature in June 2010 that still caused huge evaporations, impending the coming of dry season,” Sri Woro Harijono told a press conference.

“The main cause of the delay is sea temperature rise, but negative index of dipole mode and the likely of La-Nina phenomena also contribute to the extreme changes of weather in Indonesia.”

The agency divided the country into 220 weather zones.

In March, the BMKG issued annual prediction of weather in Indonesia with the dry period was predicted to come in June at the latest.

But, as of June 18, heavy rains still hit a number of cities across the country, including Jakarta, and caused floods.
