Students from seven faculties of Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) are caught up in a fight, hurling arguments toward each other for the sake of the pride of their departments.
Call it hyperbolic, but all the groups had done their best to come out the champion of the 11th Inter Faculty Debating Championship (XI IFDC) held from May 20 to 22 in the Soemardjito Building, Purwokerto, Central Java.
The English debating contest is the most awaited annual event. The participants come from the Economics, Law, Social and Political Sciences, Science and Engineering, Agriculture, Biology as well as Health and Medical Sciences Faculties to take part in the debate. A faculty in Unsoed may comprise several departments; English Literature for instance, is in the Social and Political Sciences Faculty.
This year, the Student English Forum, as the organizer, picked the theme "Infinity of Minds" to encourage participants to think "out of the box" and go on to become debaters and adjudicators who would represent Unsoed in the national level competitions.
Each team had been preparing for the competition for months. They had even set up daily training sessions. A little over the top, do you think? Since the very first competition, the IFDC has become an arena for the faculties to show who has got the best T-shirt design, English proficiency and, of course, the strongest team.
The medical team from the Health and Medical Sciences Faculty won the debate contest after defeating a team from the Economics Faculty in the final round supervised by Unsoed Rector Prof. Edy Yuwono, PhD.
