Hopes of the first World Cup in Africa producing the continent's first winner seem increasingly far-fetched.
By the end of the week, Ghana may be Africa's sole survivor in the competition, with the five others facing tough - or impossible - routes out of the group phase.
The Ghanaians have managed to win a match - unlike host South Africa, four-time African champion Cameroon, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast and Algeria. Cameroon has already been eliminated.
If the host doesn't reach the knockout round it would be a tournament first and a major setback, testing the Rainbow Nation's World Cup enthusiasm.
World Cup organizing committee official Rich Mkhondo says that "we'd love to see African teams going to the second round, but that's football."
