National Police deputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Zainuri Lubis confirmed Tuesday the police had detained pop rock band Peterpan's vocalist Nazriel Irham, aka Ariel, in a sex video scandal.
Zainuri said the police had named Ariel a suspect and charged him under the 2008 Pornography Law that carries a maximum punishment of 12 years in prison.
Ariel arrived at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday night. "He is now being questioned as a suspect," Zainuri said.
A number of sex tapes, allegedly featuring Ariel and two different women, allegedly high-profile TV presenters Luna Maya and Cut Tari, have been widely disseminated and become a controversial issue in the past weeks.
The two women have not been named suspects.
The term “Ariel Peterporn” is a play on his name, band and the sex tapes. The term hovered at the top of Twitter's topics, following the release of the videos on the Internet.
