Quake rattles Tasikmalaya, felt in Jakarta

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Tasikmalaya at about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, stirring panic among residents in the West Java town.

Antara news agency reported hundreds of people abandoned their homes and buildings as the temblor struck. Windows and roofs were shaken by the quake, but there were no reports of damage resulting from the tremor.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency located the epicenter of the quake at 118 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya at a depth of 34 kilometers beneath the sea floor. No tsunami warning was issued.

People in Jakarta also felt the tremor, which lasted only a few seconds.
