Agriculture Minister Suswono has suggested Indonesians reduce consuming steamed rice to 1.5 percent by implementing a No Steamed Rice Day program.

Suswono said Wednesday during his work trip to Yogyakarta that each person in the country consumed 139 kilograms of rice on average per year. This figure is considered too high compared to the country’s
decreasing rice production.

It is time for the country to seriously apply food diversification, said Suswono. “Beside rice, we also have sweet potato as a substitute,” he added, as quoted by kompas.com.

The food diversification program was introduced during the New Order regime. However, rice consumption is said to continually increase.
