House of Representatives’ Law Commission chairman Benny Kabur Harman on Wednesday called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to establish an honors board at the National Police to investigate the suspicious wealth acquired by various officers.

“This board must work independently and report its findings and recommendations directly to the President,” Benny from Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party said.

He insisted that the board was needed urgently, to restart bureaucratic reforms within the police and restore the its public credibility.

“Board members could range from active police generals to public figures who are well known for their credibility,” he said.

In its latest edition, Tempo magazine reports that a large number of police officers have gained massive amounts of money illegally and live in luxury houses they could not afford using their salaries alone.
