JAKARTA: Dozens of contract teachers who staged a protest in front of City Hall on Wednesday hurled plants, garbage and tomatoes at the building after having been unable to meet high-ranking administration officials.
The protesters demanded to be promoted to civil servants, as had been approved for their fellow contract teachers in other cities in Indonesia.
“What will be the fate of the 5,966 contract teachers in Jakarta? Will we be neglected without receiving any explanation?” Communication Forum of Indonesian Contract Teachers chief Syarifah Efiana said in a statement.
According to a 2005 decree, the promotion of contract workers to civil servant candidates should be carried out in stages between 2005 and 2009, Syraifah said. — JP
