Incumbent Din Syamsudin is the favorite to head Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, from 2010-2015, an expert says.

During his term, Din has come to be considered a leader who can speak at international forums.

“We need a figure who can explain to the world that Muslims are not terrorists. Din meets the requirements,” Jajat Burhanuddin, director of studies at the State Islamic University of Jakarta, said Sunday on the sidelines of Muhammadiyah’s 46th congress in Yogyakarta.

State Islamic University of Yogyakarta rector Amin Abdullah said Muhammadiyah needed an experienced leader, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

Separately, the head of Muhammadiyah's French chapter, Andar Nubowo, said the organization had three promising candidates for the top post - Haedar Nasir, Yunahar Ilyas and Din Syamsudin.

He said Haedar had a “progressive and good ideology.” Yunahar, he said, was a “moderate and supported religious preaching,”. Din had “national and international knowledge,” Andar added.

“However, in terms of experience, Pak Haedar is better versed than Pak Din,” he said.
