The government has decided to arm public order officers with non-lethal weapons to assist them in their duties.
Gas pistols, blank-firing pistols, tear gas launchers, and tasers have been approved for use by agency in a Home Ministry Regulationissued last March.
Kompas.com reported that the unit head, division head, section head, pelaton head, and group head and up to one-third of the public order officers on any assignment could use the weapons.
Officers will be required to obtain a license from police and governor to carry and use the weapons.
