President Jacob Zuma says the World Cup has been an economic success for South Africa.
Zuma told an investment conference in Cape Town that the country got a good return on its tens of billions of dollars invested on transport infrastructure, telecommunications and stadiums.
He said Tuesday that investment in stadiums created some 6,000 new construction jobs, while money spent on security means the country now has an additional 40,000 police officers.
Christopher Hart, chief economist for Investment Solutions, said he didn't believe the event itself was financially profitable, but that the positive coverage the country received as a result of the tournament is priceless, and can lead to investment in the future.
