Jakarta Police announced Wednesday the arrest of four suspects for allegedly conspiring with a Chinese drug syndicate to smuggle and distribute crystal methamphetamine using towels in Indonesia.
Spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said three men and one woman were arrested in a series of raids on Monday.
“We arrested S, the first suspect, at Husada Hospital in West Jakarta for possession of 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine. From her information, we then arrested R, who supplied the drugs, and confiscated another 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine,” Boy said.
The arrest of two suspects led the police to Atap Merah Apartments in Pecenongan, Central Jakarta, where they found two men allegedly working in a secret drug laboratory sponsored by the syndicate.
City police anti-narcotics chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Krisno H. Siregar said they also confiscated 38 white towels allegedly used in the smuggling operation.
The syndicate used the towels to soak up liquid crystal methamphetamine, and were later hidden in luggage after drying, Krisno said.
Police were still hunting a fifth suspect who allegedly managed the drug delivery from China, he added.
The syndicate has operated for at least six months and smuggled almost 3 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine each month, valued at more than Rp 4.5 billion (US$495,000), Krisno said.
