Indonesian students are competing with rivals from Asian countries in a fuel-saving race at Sepang F1 circuit in Kuala Lumpur.

The Indonesian students, representing University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), November 10 Institute of Technology (ITS), and Gadjah Mada University, underwent technical and safety inspection of their vehicles and slalom tests on Thursday.

Ananta Bagas Rinarta, ITB's Rajawali team leader, told The Jakarta Post that the Indonesian teams were facing tough challenges from their rivals.

“Many teams from other countries have participated in previous competitions, while we only make our debut here,” he said.

The Shell Eco-marathon race is the first to be held in Asia, featuring 83 teams from China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The competition is divided in two main categories: futuristic prototypes (no holds-barred streamlined vehicles) and more realistic “Urban Concept” cars.

Previous events took place in Europe and the US.
