Banten police are investigating the causes of an explosion at a plant belonging to PT Sulfindo Adiusaha in Pengorengan village in the Banten regency of Serang on Friday, which killed one employee and injured four others.

Provincial police detective chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Joko Suharyadi said the investigators remained in the dark about what caused the blast in three HCL storage tanks. He added the National Police forensic laboratory would help the regional police probe into the occupational accident.

“We are still examining the site of accident. To unveil the cause of the explosion we need assistance from chemists,” Joko said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Witnesses said the explosion occurred at about 10:30 a.m. They said the blast took place when company employees were filling one of tanks and conducting a maintenance work on the other.

The fatality was identified as Jam’ani, one of the company’s laboratory staff.

Those injured were rushed to Krakatau Medika Hospital in Cilegon.

A resident of nearby village, Hasanah, said the strong blast was heard from her home, which is located one kilometer from the plant.
