An Indonesian team representing the Surabaya-based November 10 Institute of Technology (ITS) won the Gasoline Fuel Award for urban concept cars with the Sapu Angin 2 vehicle, which covered a record-breaking 237.6 kilometers on 1 liter of fuel, at the Shell Eco-marathon fuel conservation race in Sepang, Malaysia, on Saturday.

According to the race organizer, Sapu Angin 2 also broke the class mileage record achieved in March by a US team at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas held in Houston, Texas, after clocking 437.2 miles per gallon or 185.8 kilometers per liter.

Sapu Angin 2 also won the first prize for its urban concept car with an internal combustion engine.
The category saw a sweep for the Indonesian teams, with the second and third prizes taken by Zamrud Khatulistiwa and Yellow Makara, both from the Jakarta-based University of Indonesia.

Mesin ITS 2 team leader, Galih Priyo Atmojo, said that the team had clocked 72 kilometers per liter during their first race, but managed to make necessary changes and adjustments to later triple their mileage in their second race.

Each team was given five race chances to record its best result.

“It was shocking. We knew the engine could do more than 100 kmpl during the trials in Surabaya, but we didn't expect [it would reach more than 200 kmpl],” Galih said.

Indonesian teams had also scooped two off-track prizes with teams from the Jakarta-based University of Indonesia winning design awards, and a team from the Bandung Institute of Technology winning the People's Choice online popularity award.
