The House of Representatives says that the monitoring committee on the Bank
Century bailout case will intensify its activities in August.
“Under my leadership, the team will re-accelerate,” one of the Housen
deputy speakers, Pramono Anung from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
(PDI-P), said at his office in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Monday.
Pramono is also one of the interim chairmen of the team, whose leadership
is switched on a monthly basis among the four House speakers. In the current
month, the leadership is on Democratic Party’s Marzuki Alie, who is also the
House speaker.
Pramono said that Marzuki’s concerns in Geneva, Switzerland, had hindered
him from effectively leading the team this month and therefore, made its
activities in monitoring the investigation on the case to be a bit slower.
The case revolves around a bailout that increased
tenfold to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million).
The bailout was
authorized in November 2008 by the then Bank Indonesia governor, Boediono, now
vice president, and former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
Both Boediono and Mulyani said what they did was
to salvage the country's banking sector amid the global financial crisis.
