JAKARTA: The North Jakarta municipality on Sunday held a coastal culture festival in Marunda, Cilincing, in an effort to promote coastal tourist destinations.

The event took place close the home of Si Pitung, a legendary Betawi Robin Hood, and the historic Al-Alam 1 Mosque.

Various Betawi cultural performances were showcased alongside the 60 stands offering seafood and services such as the free processing of resident identity and family cards.

North Jakarta Mayor Bambang Sugiyanto said coastal area residents had their own unique culture.

“We expect the occasion will promote coastal culture to create harmonious living,” Bambang was quoted as saying by news portal beritajakarta.com.

Critics say the festival was marred by poor publicity and facilities. — JP
