JAKARTA:  The Jakarta Police Cyber Crimes unit arrested an employee of an international cafe chain outlet in Tebet, South Jakarta, after he allegedly stole credit card data from the outlet’s customers and used it data to order electronic gadgets.

The suspect, known only by the initials DDB, 26, had reprinted the receipts and recorded the verification codes of the credit cards being used at the outlet, unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Winston Tommy Watuliu said Monday.

“The suspect managed to collect the data from hundreds of credit cards,” Winston said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The suspect later used the data to order gadgets from Apple Online Store in Singapore, more than 50 times, police said.

After receiving the electronic devices, the suspect had sold them.

Police received a tip-off from several banks following reports from 41 customers who had reported unknown transactions on their credit card bills.

The suspect was arrested at his rented house, where police also found 32 receipts from the outlet’s cash register, seven boxes containing Ipod nano, one Ipod touch and 18 delivery invoices. — JP
