Police warn over tampering with vehicle license plates

JAKARTA:  During a recent operation, Jakarta Traffic Police say they have issued warnings to owners of vehicles whose license plates that had been modified.

Operation “Patuh Jaya 2010” chief Comr. Jito said police had reprimanded 5,007 motorists in the first four days of the operation.

Those who received the warnings had to report either to the Jakarta Traffic Police or Jakarta Police Headquarters and replace their modified plates with new ones.

“Otherwise, [the motorists] will be fined,” Jito said Monday, adding that the maximum fine for such offences was Rp 500,000 (US$55.50)

The operation will run through to July 28.  — JP
