The Indonesian ISP Association (APJII) said Wednesday technical challenges would make it nearly impossible for Indonesia to ban Internet porn sites.

“We have discussed the matter with Internet service providers and they said it would be quite tricky,” the association’s Internet resource head Valent Riyadi said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Valent said the government would need more human resources to analyze Internet traffic to effectively filter pornographic content.

The hardware and software tools required to filter porn sites would cost about Rp 1 trillion (US$110 million) because of the number of Indonesian visitors using these websites, he said.

“The predicted price estimate is valid if we use software from an open source. However, should we choose to use a branded software, it would be even more expensive,” said Valent.

On Tuesday, Information and Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring reportedly sent a letters to ISP providers nationwide instructing them to ban porn sites. The instruction will take effect next month.

Valent said the association had yet to receive the letter.
