ANDUNG: Under the education program "Indonesia Teaches", around 50 young teachers will be sent out to remote areas, in efforts to help reduce a shortage of tutors in those areas.
Anis Baswedan, who pioneered the program, said the teachers would teach elementary school students.
"Today, two-thirds of schools in remote areas have no teachers. We hope to help tackle this problem," Anis said, after his presentation as a keynote speaker at the "How young Indonesian leaders can reach their goals while inspiring others through education" at the Bandung Institute of Technology campus on Monday.
"We want our leaders of the future to have life experience at grass-roots levels, because this program puts those university scholars close to the people," he said.
In the first stage of the program, the assignees will be sent to five regencies - Bengkalis (Riau), Kabupaten Tulang Bawang (Lampung), Pasir (East Kalimantan), Majene (West Sulawesi) and South Halmahera (North Maluku). Young university graduates are invited to join the program by registering online.
The recruitment will run until July 30. At the end of the first year, the assignees will be allowed to decide whether to continue teaching for another year or work in companies the program has agreements with. - JP
