JAKARTA: The government will have to dig deep in its pockets to find an extra Rp 2 trillion (US$220 million) to finance a proposed extension of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Jakarta, which an official says would now cost Rp 16 trillion.

Transportation Ministry’s director general for railway Tunjung Inderawan said Wednesday that the extension plan would call for the construction of extra stations.

“We need to recalculate the exact cost of the project.

“The calculations will involve an independent consultant,” Tunjung said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com news portal.

The MRT initially proposed linking the Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, and Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta, stations. The project was then revised to include a 15.5-kilometer extension from Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. The route is expected to be operational by 2016. — JP
