JAKARTA: NGOs investigating the assault of Tama S
AKARTA: NGOs investigating the assault of Tama S. Langkun by unknown assailants say the police knew the anticorruption activist was being targeted several hours before the attack.
A joint investigation by the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute said that a police officer identified as “S” met with Tama and said several low-ranking police officers were “restless” about the ICW’s investigation into the implausibly large bank accounts allegedly held by several police generals.
“Officer S offered protection to Tama, saying that ‘If anything happened, call me.’,” the NGOs said in a statement Wednesday.
Tama, a principal investigator in the police bank account case, was attacked on July 8. The incident occurred two days after unknown assailants threw Molotov cocktails at the offices of the Tempo news magazine, which had run a cover story on the case.
The police have denied they were behind the attack and vowed to solve the case and bring to the perpetrators of the attack to justice. — JP
