The Communication and Information Community (MAKSI) has called on parents to provide alternative sources of entertainment, including books, to their children on the “No TV Day”, which falls on July 25.

Your comments:

That’s an inspiring idea. I think parents in Indonesia must encourage their children to read.
I believe if our young generations learn to love reading, Indonesia will become a much better country within the next five years.

Rp 1t to help lecturers

July 17, online

The Education Ministry has allocated Rp 1 trillion (US$110 million) in scholarships for lecturers and teachers who wish to study overseas, particularly in France.

The Education Ministry established cooperative arrangements with a number of French universities in hopes of improving the capabilities of Indonesian lecturers and teachers,  Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said on Saturday.

Your comments:

This is really good, but if lecturers go to universities in France,
will their studies be conducted in English? I have nothing against the French, France, or their lovely romantic language, but would it not make more sense for our lecturers to spend their time abroad in an English speaking environment?

Sleeping during Cabinet meeting

July 13, online

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto denied media reports that he fell asleep while President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated the Situation Room at his office on Monday.

Djoko rubbed his face to reenact his motions during the Cabinet meeting, which the media described as sleepiness. “I only did this, but the reporters said I was sleeping,” Djoko said as quoted by Kompas.com.

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri declined to comment on the media reports.
Djoko, Bambang, Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng and Attorney General Hendarman Supandji were among several Cabinet members who allegedly appeared sleepy during the meeting.

Your comments:

Whether or not he actually fell asleep is immaterial.

He should neither have to deny it or excuse himself. Ministers are paid a lot of money to make the country a better place for the people.

They should neither have to stay awake at night watching football matches nor listen to boring speeches by the President.

There is so much that needs to be done in this country. Those in positions of authority should be fresh and awake to do it.

Did he fall asleep or not? He claims he did not. Why defend him for falling asleep because he was tired? Which is it?

SBY stuck in a jam

July 19, p. 2

Following public protests over daily traffic jams caused by his motorcade, the President is considering either traveling to work by helicopter or moving into Merdeka Palace.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said SBY has taken recent public complaints very seriously.

“The President is considering all suggestions, but it will take time to analyze the situation before making the best decision,” Julian told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Your comment:

Jakarta has a traffic problem? Maybe we could expect more progress if the administration stopped worrying about pop sex videos and started focusing on more important issues, like Metromini operators without proper drivers licenses (SIM).

Barack Obama moved into the White House on his first day at work. This was very professional. What about SBY? Don’t waste public money on gasoline for the presidential motorcade, an expense that seems to increase every day.
