KUPANG: Hog cholera disease is endemic in 15 of East Nusa Tenggara’s (NTT) 21 regencies in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), says an official.
The disease, which is known as classical swine fever (CSF) or pig plague, arrived the province in 1998 and has now spread to 15 regencies, Husbandry office livestock health division head Maria Geong said.
“Only six regencies are free from the infections. We suspect inter-island traffic has helped spread the disease,” Maria said, adding that Alor Regency had the highest number of cases.
The province is home to 1.5 million pigs and pork production comprises almost 70 percent of its meat industry. — JP
