JAKARTA: House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Pramono Anung said he had ordered the House's Ethical Board (BK) to investigate a rumor that some legislators demanded Rp 25 billion in bribes from Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali.

"The rumor has been circulating for a month. The board has to investigate this before it grows into slander," Pramono was quoted as saying by news portal detik.com.

The House's Commission VIII has formed a working committee to study costs for the 2010 haj pilgrim. There have been several meetings and intense debate about cutting the cost.

A widespread rumor among journalists and legislators is that the ministry and the committee had agreed on a number while Rp 25 billion would be divided up between legislators and ministry officials.

Suryadharma has denied the rumor. -JP
