JAKARTA: City Police chief Insp. Gen. Timur Pradopo asked skyscraper managers to install closed circuit television cameras inside elevators to prevent crime.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said the city's high rises were also asked to place security officers inside elevators and also to install panic buttons.

"Such incidents rarely occur in Indonesia, but are frequent in neighboring countries, such as Singapore and Thailand," Boy said.

On Thursday morning, an unknown assailant tried to rob a woman of her cellphone and purse bag in an elevator at a hospital on Jl. Salemba Tengah in Central Jakarta.

"When I used the elevator to go from the first to the third floor, a man in a checkered shirt and grey cap suddenly pulled out a knife and pointed it at me," said the victim, who works for a private television station, as quoted by news portal detik.com.

The woman, who declined to be named, said that none of her belongings were missing.

She discovered her nose was bleeding after leaving the hospital. - JP
