The Jakarta Police’s water patrol unit announced Tuesday they had arrested five suspects for allegedly smuggling more than 4,000 liters of illegal diesel through Jakarta Bay in Muara Kamal, North Jakarta.
The five suspects, identified as Taryani, Candra, Amin, Casmita dan Rosid, had been arrested early Monday by the unit’s patrolling officers who were suspicious about the men's fishing boat, Second. Insp. Sudi Santoso, an officer in the unit, said.
“We stopped the boat and found that it was transporting 115 jerry cans each containing 35 liters of diesel fuel,” Sudi said.
“We also found that the people on the boat had no proper documents or license for the fuel.”
During questioning, the suspects said they had bought the diesel from a tug boat in Jakarta Bay. They planned to sell it in Kamal Muara area.
Diesel fuel is one of two types of fuel subsidized by the government and distributed by state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina for Rp 4,500 per liter.
