A hearing between the House of Representatives’ monitoring team on the Bank Century bailout case and Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar on Wednesday has been cancelled.
In his official letter, Patrialis said he could not attend the meeting as an inter-departmental team specially established to follow up the case, which includes his ministry, was still working.
One of the monitoring team members, Hendrawan Supratikno from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), regretted the minister's sudden cancellation.
"To solve this case, we need not only political will, but also political commitment," Hendrawan said.
He said the letter was a blatant proof of the ministry’s failure to gain any significant development in following up the case.
The case revolves around a bailout that suspiciously ballooned ten times the original estimate to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million).
The bailout was authorized in November 2008 by then finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and then Bank Indonesia governor Boediono, who is now the Vice President.
