AKARTA: The Islam Defenders Front (FPI) plans to deploy 5,000 of its members to conduct raids on entertainment establishments in the capital ahead of the Islamic fasting month.
The chairman of the FPI's Jakarta branch, Habib Salim Alatas, said on Tuesday that his organization would target entertainment venues that were operating during the religious month.
"This action will be taken if the police and public order officers are seen to have ignored our reports for more than two days," he told tempointeraktif.com.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said the city administration would take stern action against entertainment centers that violated regulations.
Under a 2004 bylaw, entertainment centers such as karaoke establishments can only operate from 8:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., and nightclubs, discotheques and massage places should be closed during Ramadan. - JP
