Two people were found dead inside the state-owned shipping company PT Pelni office building in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta as firefighters combed the structure after they doused the flame that gutted the tower on Friday.

The remains of AC technician Edi Pramono, 27, and Dadang Nurdin, 50, an employee of cleaning service company PT SGS, were discovered in two separate elevators.

“They died of suffocation as they were trapped in the elevators,” operation chief of Central Jakarta fire brigade Ahmad Lamping was quoted by kompas.com.

He said the electricity system failed as the fire escalated, causing the elevators to stop operating.

Edi was installing air conditioning system at the building and Dadang was supervising cleaning service works when the fire started at about 10:30 a.m.

The bodies of the two victims were admitted to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital morgue.

Spokesman for PT Pelni, Mungi P. Retno, said the state firm would provide compensation for the families of the two casualties.
