Former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso has said rapid urbanization, flooding, transportation and waste management are some of the city’s unsolved problems.
Sutiyoso said Tuesday that rapid urbanization was fed by the poor economic development throughout Indonesia.
“The ‘candy’ is still at the National Monument [in Jakarta]. People will keep on coming to the capital if the ‘candy’ is not spread nationwide,” he said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com, referring to money.
Speaking about floods, Sutiyoso said Jakarta lacked much-needed lakes that could serve as water catchment areas, he said.
The city's dire traffic congestion, he continued, was due to the lack of credible public transportation.
“Around 650,000 private cars and motorcycles enter Jakarta on a daily basis because the city does not offer alternative transportation,” he added.
Sutiyoso also slammed Jakarta’s poor waste management, which he said handled 6,500 tons of garbage manually every day.
