Italy: Earthquake rocks island off Sicily

A- A A+

Earthquake experts say a moderate temblor has struck in the sea near the Aeolian islands off Sicily.

Rocco Favara, from Italy's national geophysics institute, told Sky TG24 that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.5.

It struck shortly before 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) Monday, about 19 kilometers (13 miles) under the sea just off the coast of Vulcano, the southernmost of the tiny islands in the seven-island Aeolian archipelago.

The Italian news agency ANSA, reporting from Sicily, quoted the mayor of Lipari, the largest island in the chain, as saying some landslides, set off the by quake, apparently had injured an unspecified number of people on that island.

The Aeolians' tiny year-round population is small, but the islands get crowded with thousands of tourists during the summer.
