A Frankfurt to Paris train on Tuesday collided with a garbage truck and two carriages derailed, leaving one passenger seriously injured and nine other people slightly hurt, police said.
The InterCityExpress high-speed train ran into the truck near Lambrecht, about 90 miles (140 kilometers) southwest of Frankfurt, after the truck slid down a wet slope and partially blocked the tracks, federal police spokesman Reza Ahmari said.
"From what we see now, this could have ended worse," he added.
The seriously injured person was flown to a hospital, Ahmari said. The truck driver was able to get out of his vehicle in time and the train driver managed to slow down before the impact by applying the emergency brakes, he said.
Railway operator Deutsche Bahn said trains from Frankfurt to Paris were being redirected via Strasbourg, France. Ahmari said it would likely take at least a day to clear the tracks.
