The National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) premiered on Wednesday a documentary movie on regional ordinances which it said discriminated against women.

"The movie is a visual interpretation of Komnas Perempuan's monitoring on discriminatory bylaws in the name of religion, morality and the desire of the majority," Andi Yentriyani, Komnas Perempuan's Commissioner for Community Participation said before the screening.

Titled "Atas Nama" (In the name of), the movie features testimonies of people who fall victims to the bylaws, including the family of a woman who was detained for allegedly practicing prostitution in Tangerang, Banten, followers of the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect, and women in Aceh.

"I am afraid of violating the bylaw," Keumalawati from Aceh said of an ordinance on dress code in her testimony.

Asmawati, another source from Aceh, said she felt the bylaws had prevented women from achieving more in life despite poverty and lack of healthcare facing the province.

Commission leader Yuniyanti Chuzaifah asked the government to revoke the bylaws.

"If this inequality persists...it could lead to national disintegration," she said.

So far this year, the commission has recorded at least 154 bylaws that are deemed as discriminatory against women.
