A Malaysian was arrested at the Manila airport Wednesday after Philippines customs officials found 30 pounds (14 kilograms) of methamphetamine hydrochloride hidden in his luggage, an official said.
A passenger on the same flight from Bangkok fled after seeing the Malaysian accosted by customs officials and is a suspected accomplice, said Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority.
"Our theory for now is that there were two suspects. When one of them was arrested, his companion fled," he said. "The drug shipment was too big. It is highly likely they had someone waiting for them in Manila."
Security camera footage was being reviewed to identify any other suspects, Honrado said.
Authorities have struggled to curb trafficking of drugs, particularly methamphetamine, locally known as "shabu", which has thrived due to customs and police corruption. The country's illegal drug trade is estimated to be worth US$6.3 billion to $8.4 billion yearly.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima recently ordered airport immigration officials to be investigated after Hong Kong airport authorities arrested Philippine legislator Rep. Ronald Singson on July 11 on suspicion of carrying 0.92 ounces (26.1 grams) of cocaine on a flight from Manila.
