A magnitude 5 earthquake hit Ternate in North Maluku early Wednesday morning, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the quake struck 178 kilometers northwest of Ternate at 10 kilometers below the surface, at 5:07 a.m. Jakarta time.

Earlier this month, a magnitude 6.4 quake shook the ocean off Ternate, during a visit by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the province.
