The National Police on Wednesday reported details of funding channeled from Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir to an alleged terrorist training camp in Aceh.
“We have a testimony from [terrorist suspect] Ubaid Lutfi Haedaroh regarding Ba’asyir’s direct and indirect involvement in the Aceh training camp. This testimony is also supported by dozens of documents about Ba’asyir role,” newly appointed National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Iskandar Hasan said on Wednesday.
Ubaid has been widely cited as having assisted Ba’asyir’s in arranging fund-raising events to build the Aceh training center.
According to the police, Ba’asyir had given money to Ubaid directly on four occasions, paying him Rp 5 million, US$5,000, Rp 120 million and Rp 50 million.
The police also said they had evidence that on four other occasions Ba’asyir had channeled money through Toyib, the Jama’ah Ansyarud Tauhid (JAT) Surakarta branch treasurer, totalling Rp 100 million, Rp 10 million, Rp 25 million and Rp 75 million.
Iskandar said Ba’asyir had donated Rp 997,5 million and U$5,100 to the Aceh project. The money was partly made available in cash and through bank transfers. One of the suspects, Rozali, who was also Toyib’s courier, was known to have withdrawn Rp 67.5 million from the BRI branch in Sigli, Aceh.
The money was then given to Yahya (alias Dulmatin), the camp field commander, to be later used to support training, Iskandar said.
