Eight animals under intensive care at Surabaya Zoo

Eight animals at the Surabaya Zoo in East Java are been treated with intensive care by local veterinarians, an official said Thursday.

Agus Supangkat, the zoo spokesman, told Antara state news agency that the treated animals were a bison, a camel, a lion, a white tiger, a black bear, two komodo dragons, a giraffe and a Sumatran tiger.

Agus said that the animals were suffering from numerous diseases and had to be treated with intensive care.

The bigger animals were treated in their enclosures, while others had been taken to quarantine rooms he said.

Earlier this month, Agus had said all animals at Indonesia’s largest zoo – many of them critically endangered – could be dead within five years unless strong action was taken to change the culture of neglect and corruption that permeated the facility.

In recent days, an endangered Sumatran tiger was found dead in its cage after an African lion and an Australian kangaroo had also died.
