MEDAN: Security personnel at Polonia International Airport in Medan foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 12,500 Ecstasy pills worth Rp 2.5 billion (US$277.5 million).
The authorities detained Lim Sin Co, who was traveling from Medan to Jakarta by Citilink, in connection with the smuggling attempt.
Airport management company Angkasa Pura general manager Bram Bharoto Tjiptadi said Lim had carried the narcotics in a handbag.
“We promptly detained the suspect for questioning,” he said, adding officers found Rp 14 million and US$500 in cash inside the bag.
Police said Lim admitted to being a courier and was sup-posed to hand over the drugs to someone in Jakarta, but the suspect declined to name the would-be recipient.
North Sumatra police chief Insp. Gen. Oegroseno said there was no indication that Lim was connected to international drug syndi-cates, based on the police’s initial investigation.
“The suspect’s network remains locally based. We are looking into uncovering it,” he said. — JP
