YOGYAKARTA: Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has given scholarships to 500 students to accommodate members of the community who lack financial resources.

The recipients will be able to study at the university for four years for free and given a stipend
of Rp 500,000 (US$55).

“The 500 students from poorer families have been selected through the Talent Scouting for the Poor program,” said Hariyanto, a UGM official for student affairs, during a meeting with the student parents on Wednesday.

He said the university received funds for the scholarships from 50 trustees and would channel Rp 26 billion to 9,671 recipients.

“We hope that the scholarship program will give equal chance of study to all people,” he said. — JP
