Govt says rice import unnecessary

The government has said that rice import was unecessary as the country's rice stock was still enough to supply local demand.

Agriculture Minister Suswono said as quoted by kompas.com that the current price hike in rice was due to an increasing demand rather than lack of supply.

"We have sufficient rice stock. There is no need to import rice," Suswono said.
